Our church offers a variety of ways for you to get connected into the life of our church! Once connected within our walls, you can then take that out of our walls and invite others to experience Christian community!
"Heartmenders" - Tuesday mornings at 10 am ~ The "Heartmenders" is the knitting and crocheting group at First UMC Newport. All are invited to attend. ~ The Heartmenders see themselves as more than a knitting and crocheting group. They view themselves as a support group for one another. ~ They knit and crochet baby blankets for the hospital's newborn nursery, lap robes and small afghans for the Isaiah117 House, prayer shawls and scarves, hats and scarves for local schools, items for the annual First UMC Newport "Holiday Bazaar," and any other creation on their minds. ~ Miss Nancy Lingerfelt is the group facilitator. A.M. Book Study Club - Tuesday mornings at 10:30 am. ~ The Book Study Club is a ministry focused on growing their minds, hearts, and souls through literary works. All are welcome to join. ~ Quite often, the more memorable parts of their mornings are the discussions that emerge from the readings. ~ Their current book is Everything Happens for a Reason by Kate Bowler. ~ Miss Cathy Bush is the group facilitator. "Stitches of Love" - Thursday mornings at 9 am. ~ The "Stitches of Love is the quilting group at First UMC Newport. All are welcome to join. ~ Starting in 2010, they have put together and donated over 700 lap-size quilts. ~ Their quilts have been donated to "SafeSpace of East Tennessee" and the local Isaiah117 House. They also display their quilts regularly at church worship services and functions. ~ Mrs. Eileen Hamilton is the group facilitator. Altar Guild Ministry ~ The First UMC Newport Altar Guild ministry creates and maintains the aesthetics for our church campus. Anyone is welcome to join. ~ The Altar Guild prepares decorations for the Sanctuary, Chapel, church office, and other campus locations. ~ They aid in Communion preparation, altar upkeep, are in charge of the floral ministry, and assist in other church projects. ~ Mr. Charles Phillips is the group facilitator. FUMC Sanctuary Choir - Wednesdays at 7 pm - Sundays at 10:20 am ~ The Sanctuary Choir of FUMC Newport's mission is to enhance the spirit of worship, educate the singers and congregation on spiritual truths presented in worship, and elevate the participation of parishioners both in the choir and congregation ~ The choir serves as they lead the congregation through music via anthems, calls to worship, and choral benedictions ~ The Scripture they hold close to their heart is Psalm 100:1 - "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands!" ~ Mr. Jerry Maloy is our music director and choir director. Handbell Choir - Wednesdays at 4:45 pm ~ The FUMC Handbell Choir plays classic Christian hymns and seasonal favorites during Sunday worship throughout the year. ~ No musical knowledge or experience is necessary to join the Handbell Choir! ~ Mrs. Gail Campbell is the Handbell Choir director. United Women in Faith ~ The FUMC Newport chapter of the United Women in Faith (UWF) seeks to serve the women of the church and community through discipleship, fellowship, prayer, and service. ~ The UWF mission is to "connect and nurture women through Christian spiritual formation, leadership development, creative fellowship, and education so that they can inspire, influence, and impact local & global communities." ~ They meet regularly throughout the year, normally for lunch followed by a time of study and fellowship. ~ The Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church has a very active UWF ministry.
