ServeOur vision: We are a joyful community striving to ... SERVE God and our brothers and sisters in need.
Serving is putting our faith in action. Serving engages the head and heart. We don't just think and feel; we act, as well.
There are many ways to serve at the First United Methodist Newport that are open to willing and sincere servants. People can participate in being an usher, singing in the choir, working with our children and youth, helping in the delivery of items to the Bread Basket -- just to give you a few examples. The pastor or a staff member will be happy to help you explore ways to serve.
Missions is a huge emphasis at FUMC. We have a Missions Team that facilitates the involvement of folks in church in mission efforts.
Missions is local: Our members help out at the Bread Basket, which offers food to those in need, and prepare meals at Feed My Sheep, a local ministry that seeks to reach people who are hungry. We also hold an annual Holiday Bazaar where 100 percent of the funds raised goes to support local efforts aimed at making a difference in the lives of others, and we make about 800 desserts every year in support of Northport Baptist Church's efforts to provide an annual Christmas meal to families in need.
Missions is regional: We participate in different mission efforts as part of Holston Conference and the Morristown District of the United Methodist Church. This includes the Jubilee Project, which is aimed at reducing the oppression of poverty in Hancock County, the second poorest county in Tennessee, through a variety of outreach projects. These include providing safe drinking water, home repairs, food supplementation and ministries for women and youth. Find more information about the Jubilee project online, or call 423-733-4195.
Missions is global: We take part in efforts in other parts of the world. We participate in ministry that we could not accomplish as a single church. With other churches in the Holston Conference, we regularly participate in calls for special collections in response to need and disasters, and we participate in a hands-on mission project every year. In 2016, we are filling Food Buckets for Liberia. In addition, we support three missionaries -- one in Zimbabwe and two in Sudan -- and global missions such as Operation Christmas Child, an interdenominational effort to reach children around the world with the message of Christmas.
